Method

Methodology: counts are computed live from Whistle's database of official NCAA athletics staff directories. Only current (non-departed) positions count; roles and sports come from published titles; a school's first extraction and coverage artefacts are excluded from change counts. Public pages never include names or contact details.

A new hire is a person present in a directory read who was absent from the previous read; a departure is the reverse; a title change is the same person with a different published title. The first read of a school and any read that re-lists 15% or more of a roster (a directory redesign, not real turnover) are excluded as coverage artefacts, so counts understate rather than overstate real movement. Directories are read roughly weekly for Division I and every three to four weeks for Divisions II and III, so a month's count reflects when a change was detected, not necessarily when it happened.

Frequently asked questions

When do college athletic departments hire the most?

In Whistle's data the busiest recent month was 2026-10 with 2,364 detected new hires. Coaching turnover clusters after football season (late November to January) and after basketball season (March to April); support-staff hiring follows in late spring and summer.

How does Whistle detect coaching changes?

By re-reading each school's official athletics staff directory on a schedule and comparing it with the previous read. Subscribers receive new-hire, departure and title-change alerts for the schools they follow.
